Women in Islam

Women in Islam.

Contrary to what is often publicised about women in Islam, giving the West an opinion that women are oppressed.

Islam is totaly the opposite.  The rights of a woman are often mentioned in the Holy Quran. Unforutanetly years after Hz Muhammed PBUH (peace be upon him) died some Muslims did not follow the guidance of him and the Holy Quran.  Hence we have countries who implemented their own laws as regards to womens rights.  The simplest way to explain the Holy Quran, is that it is a book of rules. The following is some extracts from the Holy Quran relating to women.

Islam highlights a woman's distinct personality and , upon entering into marriage, she is entitled to retain her maiden name. This is symbolic of her unique Identity.  Women have the right to choose their marriage partner and cannot be married without their free consent.  A wife is generously taken care of in Islam. Together with all the required provisions  for her welfare and protection at the time of marriage.

Not only does a woman have the right to freely choose her husband, she also has the right to terminate an unsuccessfull marriage.  For the sake of family stability a waiting period of roughly 3 months is advised and cooling off period. The 3 months period is also so that, if she takes another husband and gets pregnant, there is no doubt as to who the father is.

Islam gives women the right to personal ownership of property and wealth.  According to Islam, the womans rights to her money, real estate, or other property is acknowledged and this right does not change when she marries. Furthermore, the woman has the right to buy, sell ,mortgage or lease any portion of her property independently.

Islam gives women the same work rights as men so long as her important role as a mother and wife are not negelected, because Islam beleives the role as awife and mother is paramount and indespensable to society.

History is witness to Muslim women's contribution to civilisation in various professions such as teaching, medicine and other fields.  The Holy Quran rules remain the same to this day and cannot be changed.
